first song- September 3rd 2015
When first hearing this assignment I was automatically reminded of James Taylor. My parents would always have music on in the background while growing up. We were all so young, my parents just played what they wanted, which has now morphed into my child hood music -Tom Jones, James Taylor, Pearl Jam. James Taylor was one of the only tapes I would listen to when I would go to be. Prominently, Track five on Side B.
"Carolina in My Mind" is the first song that I ever wanted to play on repeat and fall asleep to. Honestly wish there was a repeat button on the old cassette players. As my parents would tuck me in, we would sing to it, they would say goodnight and I would continue to listen. When I was young, I never thought about the lyrics further than someone named Carolina was on his mind. Now as I have grown up I realize, Taylor is talking about the state of North Carolina... Now everything makes much more sense.
For this piece I decided to morph my young miscommunication and my older self together. I stuck to what I though when I was a kid, a girl named Carolina on someones mind. The lyrics include "Can't you see the sunshine, Can't you just feel the moonshine" and "Gotta make it back home again soon", plus the whole idea of going somewhere in your mind. By using these three ideas, I was compelled in creating a dream state drawing of two people's limbs intertwined. I love the idea of being so close to someone you can't tell the difference between on persons arm and the other. By using an extremely dark background, I wanted to only highlight certain parts of the body and use the sunlight as the whitest highlights.
