This week I focused on the song Barbry Allen. The two versions we were given, I was drawn to the voice of Jean Richie instead of the Ollie Gilbert. I focused on the lines "Oh she was buried 'neath the old church tower And he was buried all nigh her And out of his bosom grew a red, red rose Out of Barbry's grew a green briar". I placed two gender neutral figures in the page to represent the two subjects of the song. I loved the visual of the roses growing and the briar- and the rose growing in the briar. In my head, I couldn't help but try to visualize these lines. I feel like I was a tad bit literal this week, but I felt like I needed to visualize such a beautiful line.
I feel that there is a sense of sadness in the Appalachia songs, because they only have so much in their lives.
