When listening to all the version of You Are My Sunshine this week, I was influences by the more saddened versions (specifically the Johnny Cash version in 1975). Could have been my mood during the week, but the other versions were not 'me' enough to be able to get influenced. The song took to me to a moment, and a relationship instead of a place. The image I created is the moment you wake up or the moment you are to delusional and you see something/someone in your presence. Kind of like a circle into another dimension... with the sunbeams around it. For me, I chose my grandfather who passed three years ago, but some how continuously get an art piece made about his in every class. I think its him way of influencing my creativity so I know he is still there. The way I portrayed him seem way religious, but my intention was not so.
Part of the reason I think I leaned toward the religious side is because of the song "Heavenly Sunshine" rendition. I love female vocal from the early 1900's and how raw Henton and Gillbert are singing.
Jimmy Davis was where I started listening this week. The way davis sings the song is much more white country side and was not meshing with my mood this week. Davis was from Louisiana (where he was governor for two terms) and recorded You Are My Sunshine in 1940. There were two groups that recorded the song before Davis- The Pine Ridge Boys and The Rice Brother Gang. But while Davis was running for governor he would sing the song, which is where the confusion lies on who wrote it. With Davis's help the song has officially become the state song for Louisiana.
